We took a trip in July to Port Aransas, Texas which is close to Corpus Christi. We wanted to go to the beach, but didn't want to go too far or make it too hard on ourselves. With little kids the words "relaxing" and "vacation" seldom go together, but we were determined to make it just that for everyone. And it worked for the most part! Here were the key factors- we invited my mom (Mimi) on the trip, which gave the adults the advantage over the kids 3:2. We took turns sleeping in, taking naps, taking walks, and enjoying time with the boys. This worked great because no one got burnt out. We also chose to fly (1.5 hours) instead of drive (8 hours). We love each other but no need to spend so much time closed in with energy filled children. Another thing that made the trip enjoyable was balancing "free time" with planned activities. We knew after a few days of doing nothing but being beach and pool bums we would all be ready for something else. So we planned a trip into Corpus to the aquarium which was a nice change up, and also some fun dinners out in the town. Lastly, we tried to stick to the kid's normal schedule for the most part. I know some families do well with fly by the seat of your pants, no set schedule days, but that drives me nuts. I really enjoy knowing what to expect and I think the kids like it too. Did I mention my mom cooked and did laundry the whole trip? And that she enjoyed it? If at all possible, I highly recommend taking your version of a Mimi on your family trip.
We stayed at a condo that we had stayed at in college. Different stage of life, but still just as enjoyable! Here are some pictures from our time in Port A.
