Proper English

Here are some of my favorite British sayings so far because I think they sound much fancier than their American meanings...

feeling broody - wanting to have a baby
rubbish bin - trash can
hoover/hoovering - vacuum/vacuuming
fairy cakes - cupcakes
porridge - oatmeal
hob - stovetop
wonky - screwy (the wheels on this trolley are wonky)
trolley - shopping cart
pram/pushchair/buggy - stroller
aubergine - eggplant
fancy - like (would you fancy a coffee?)
queue up - stand in line
courgette - zuchinni
chips - french fries
biscuits - cookies
bangers and mash - sausage and mashed potatoes
the shopping - the groceries (honey, please help me put the shopping away)
lolly - lollipop/sucker
ice lolly - popsicle
dummy - pacifier
cot - crib

So American friends, I may say something like this to you when we get back and I expect you to understand... "Take the baby out of her buggy and get her an ice lolly while I put the shopping away. I'll empty the rubbish bin and hoover while you get the bangers and mash warmed up on the hob. Would you fancy a glass of wine? Maybe not if you're feeling broody. Oh, and don't forget to ice the fairy cakes for dessert!"
